These embroidered felt coasters are quick and easy to make. They are a perfect project for using the smallest felt scraps.
I attached the pattern pieces, you’ll see the download button below. Just print this at 100% scale. You’ll need 2 of the large circles.
Cutting the tiny pieces from felt can be a little trying. One helpful trick is to use freezer paper. Your edges will be very clean with this method. It is optional though.
Lay freezer paper, waxy side down, on top of your pattern pieces. Trace the pieces. Be sure to leave a little space around each piece.
Cut out the shapes leaving a border of about 1/8″ or a little more.
Now lay your pieces, waxy side down, on to your felt. Use a medium warm iron, no steam. This only takes a couple seconds, don’t overdo. Check to see if it is adhered. The paper should be adhered but should pull off easily. Then cut them out on the line with small very sharp scissors.
I made these with a wool/rayon blend felt, which is the perfect weight for these. I found using a fabric glue stick to hold the small pieces in place was very helpful, since the pieces are so small.
Then I used mercerized cotton embroidery floss to attach them with little stitches, but I also added some extra stitches for definition and highlights. I just used basic embroidery stitches, but you can make it your own with other decorative stitches. And you can use other colors to add more character.
I added all my shapes to the top circle only, then I attached the second large circle on the back with a blanket stitch. And it’s done!
They make great mug rugs for your hot chocolate, tea or coffee, but they would also work as a candle mat.
I love working with felt, there are so many colors to choose and no fraying edges! These embroidered felt coasters would look great in your fall decorating and would be a nice little gift for someone.
